Americans Open to Plant-Based Food.

According to a new report, “Climate Change and the American Diet,” Americans are open to plant-based diets but they don’t know where to start. The good news from the report is that, overwhelmingly, Americans are open to including more plant-based foods into their diets. 94% of Americans surveyed expressed willingness to eat more plants, with more than 50% willing to eat more plant-based meat alternatives.

Countless studies and reports have shown that a shift toward plant-based diets and away from animal agriculture can reduce the tremendous strain on our planet’s resources while significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Animal agriculture accounts for at least 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is the largest single-contributor of methane. Animal agriculture is also incredibly resourced intensive, with water consumption in the U.S. alone ranging between 36 and 74 trillion gallons of water annually.

The benefits that plant-based diets can have on human and environmental health are well documented. Yet, more than half of those surveyed have rarely heard about the environmental impact of food in the media, and when people don’t have enough information, they are unlikely to consider changing their eating habits.

Since our inception in 2012, Green Menu’s volunteers have been working within our community to educate and promote conscious decisions regarding our food choices and how they impact our health and our environment. In keeping with this aim, Green Menu has donated over 500 pounds of plant-based meat alternatives this week to San Gabriel Mission whose Food Pantry has been serving the needs of our community since 2013.
